I believe that
survivors of childhood sexual abuse long to know two things: that they are not
alone, and it was not their fault.
Statistics that show the prevalence of childhood sexual abuse in
our society are not enough to alleviate that feeling of being alone. What we all need is
someone to sit with us, to tell us they know how we feel and do it in such a way that we
believe them. We need someone to tell us, however many times we need to hear it, that
nothing we did or didn't do made the sexual abuse happen.
Besides the work we do with therapists, in support groups or in
our own self-help work, survivors of childhood sexual abuse can support each other in
their healing work. We can listen to each other, providing a safe haven for the stories we
need to tell. We can accept each other with openness, understanding and compassion. Every
time we help others in their healing journeys, we heal ourselves.
